Hidden Gardens of Charlton Musgrove Open Their Gates

Date Posted : May 24, 2009

The gardens open event at Charlton Musgrove on Saturday 20 June was a great success. The sun shone and over 200 people came to visit the 10 gardens which were open and our ancient oak tree – the largest maiden oak in Somerset. The gardens varied from formal to cottage, classic borders, orchards and knot gardens, walled gardens and woodland walks. At time traffic was at a standstill in Shalford Lane and emergency measures had to be taken to redirect people. There was a fantastic community spirit and everyone really enjoyed looking at some lovely gardens and meeting friends. The churches were both decorated beautifully with St Stephens tower open for those who had the energy to climb up and enjoy the fantastic views.

Tile painting took place in the village hall with children painting individual tiles which will be used in the new toilets and lobby area. The ancient oak was a big attraction with children climbing up the tree and getting inside the hollow trunk. At one time 7 children where either up, or in the tree!

We raised £2400 towards the village hall appeal fund and a huge thank you goes to all those who helped organize and run the event. Over forty households were involved – truly a community event. To those who contributed raffle prizes and to the cooks who baked a delicious mountain of cakes and other delights. Thank you so much to Rochford Garden Machinery who generously sponsored the event and to South Somerset District Council who did so much of our printing and signs.

Finally a special thank you to all those dedicated gardeners who worked round the clock to make their gardens so lovely and give everyone such a great day out.
