Another boost for Charlton Musgrove’s new hall
The plan to build a new hall for Charlton Musgrove has received another boost with three grant awards. Go to Our Hall Latest News page for more information about the grants.
The new hall - warm, wired and welcoming, will be open for bookings in October 2010.
At a public meeting on Friday 18th September the people of Charlton Musgrove unanimously voted to support the Trustee’s recommendation and build a new Memorial Hall.
Detailed plans and architects proposals have been drawn up. The villagers have been busy fundraising (£67,000 has already been raised at events and through an appeal) and successful grant applications to the Parish Council, South Somerset District Council, Somerset County Council and the Mackintosh Foundation, and in particular the most recent award of £77,500 from Viridor Landfill Credits, have been critical to the decision.
The old hall will close in February 2010 and the new one will open in October. The new hall will be one metre closer to the road to allow car access to the back of the building for deliveries to the kitchen. The building contract is still under negotiation and the committee is determined to find temporary homes for all our current hall users.
The new hall will be a similar size to the old one, but additions include a lobby area, a large meeting room, a bigger kitchen, and storage & cloakroom facilities. The whole building will be well insulated and have modern sustainable heating. Everyone in the community will have another opportunity to input into the fine detail at a joint Parish Plan and Hall Workshop to be held on Friday 2nd October. Bex Kimber-Danger was keen for people with fresh eyes to have a final look at the plans, to consider sustainability issues and put forward ideas for the “memorial and historical” aspects.
The whole team were really encouraged by comments on the plans at the public meeting – “what a fantastic resource – we can’t wait for the meeting room – I can imagine we may be booking it weekly” , ”no queues in the cloakrooms” and from the parish council “a warm hall – wonderful. We may even be able to take our coats off and use the meeting room without heating the whole hall”.
Hall treasurer Sally Amery commented after the meeting, “We are absolutely thrilled at our latest award from Viridor but are also very focused and working hard to raise the last £35,000 before we start the building programme.”
