Our Village

Charlton Musgrove is a sprawling rural community with 154 households. It is one of the largest parishes in Somerset (1485 hectares).  The village boasts an ancient 600 year old oak tree and sits under the watchful eye of Alfred’s Tower on the nearby Penselwood ridge. The village is proud of its newly built Memorial Hall which is available for community events as well as private and corporate occasions. Although the village has lost its rectory and school it has retained a farm shop, garden centre, pub and two churches, and the famous Wincanton Race Course is within the parish boundary. There are also a number of private companies based in the village (see our business directory).

The village is within the local government area of South Somerset District Council which has its main offices in nearby Yeovil.  Our nearest town is Wincanton, just 3 miles away.  Also within easy distances are Bruton, Mere, Gillingham and Shaftesbury.  There are two railway stations nearby, one in Bruton with links to Bath and Bristol and a second in Gillingham which is on the London to Exeter line. The village is situated near to the A303 which means good road links to London to the east and Exeter and Plymouth to the west.

Our closest significant tourist site is the National Trust garden at Stourhead, just 4 miles to the east of the village.  We are in easy striking distance of Glastonbury with its famous tor and of course the Glastonbury festival, Wells with its beautiful cathedral and The National Trust’s Montacute House, a magnificent Elizabethan built stone house near Yeovil.  Bath, Bristol and Salisbury are also within an hours drive, as is the international airports at Bristol and Bournemouth.

Charlton Musgrove is set within the beautiful rural landscape of east Somerset.  It is honeycombed with footpaths that enable the walker to enjoy the pleasures of our local countryside and also has a number of bridle paths.  In addition to National Hunt racing at the local racecourse there is a golf course within the boundary of the race course and in nearby Wincanton there is a well equipped sports centre and swimming pool.

Primary schools can be found within 4 miles of the village, in Wincanton, Bourton, Bruton and Gillingham. Senior state schools are also situated in Wincanton and Gillingham. There are several public schools also within easy reach of Charlton Musgrove. Sixth form facilities can be found in Gillingham, Bruton, Sherborne, and Yeovil College. This college is also linked to Bournemouth University and caters for many aspects of further education.

The Jurassic coastline of Dorset, which has been declared a World Heritage site is within a 90 minute drive of the village.
