The work is progressing to programme, with a 5 week full closure of the road commencing at 00:01 hrs on Monday 15th February 2010. Diversion routes will be fully signed.
This is an extensive maintenance scheme, commencing east of Mere and finishing at the junction with the B3089. The work will involve repair and strengthening of the road, repair of drainage and installation of new safety barriers. The road will also be widened by a metre where possible, to assist with drainage and provide additional space for breakdowns and maintenance.
The Highways Agency and its service provider, Balfour Beatty Mott MacDonald, has reviewed the nature of the works involved and has substantially reduced the period required for a full 24 hour closure from 14 weeks, as previously proposed, to 5 weeks.
By changing the design and working methods, significant work is being undertaken safely under reduced traffic control, including lane restrictions, traffic signals and night-time closures, followed by a full closure of the road for five weeks commencing at 00:01 hrs on Monday 15 th February 2010, when access is required to excavate and strengthen the existing road construction.
To allow the maximum level of activity to be undertaken, within the minimum amount of traffic management, construction activities have been broken down into phases to reflect the nature of work and limit disruptions.
The second phase of activity was completed during November and December and involved preparation work for the widening, continued drainage work, signage and safety fencing.
Traffic Management
Phase 3 commenced in January 2010 and comprises drainage channel construction and signage (24 hour single lane closure on three lane section of Chaddenwick Hill for 4 weeks) and major surfacing and drainage channel works (24 hour closure for 5 weeks from 15th February, excluding unusual weather risk). During the full closure traffic will be diverted onto the following routes:
- All eastbound traffic to use the A37/A361/A36 except high loads;
- High loads to use A359/A371/A361/A36; and
- All westbound traffic to use A350/B3081 through Gillingham
